No. 5 All-Star Racing Chevrolet

Rick Hendrick started All-Star Racing in 1984 with 5,000 feet of space rented from crew chief Harry Hyde. This is one of the first cars the team fielded. Hendrick, who hired Geoff Bodine as driver of the No. 5 Chevrolet, was concerned that his team wouldn’t survive financially after starting the NASCAR Winston Cup Series season without a sponsor. But after some early success, All-Star Racing landed Northwestern Security Life, which wrote Hendrick a check for $5,000. In Bodine’s 69th career Winston Cup start, the team’s first victory came at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, which was followed by three pole positions and two more wins: at Riverside (Calif.) International Raceway and Nashville (Tenn.) International Raceway. The team finished ninth in the 1984 Winston Cup standings before being renamed Hendrick Motorsports the following year.
