Randy Dorton

Rick Hendrick acquired Competition Engines in 1984 and invited the company's founder, legendary engine builder Randy Dorton, to join his fledgling NASCAR team. After coming to Hendrick Motorsports, Dorton was named NASCAR's Engine Builder of the Year in 1986. His motors powered nine championships across NASCAR’s major series -- Sprint Cup (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2001), Nationwide (2003) and Craftsman Truck (1997, 1999 and 2001). Dorton was heavily involved in research and development for both Hendrick Motorsports and General Motors, helping develop the next generation of racing technology. His philosophies continue to guide the Hendrick Motorsports engine operation today.
